Spring Fling Concert

Sprint ConcertCongratulations on the Spring Fling concert Friday, May 10 in the Lassiter Concert Hall.

The evening began with a pre-concert picnic in the courtyard at 5:00 p.m. There were grills where supporters brought tables, chairs, and food. The jazz band played a diverse selection from hard bop to afro-Cuban as visitors had a wonderful opportunity to sit and chat with friends, eat, and enjoy the spring weather.

After eating and enjoying the jazz band, patrons entered the concert hall for a night of wonderful music by the Lassiter bands and small ensembles.

There were lovely keepsake programs available. The concert concluded with a rousing rendition of Alfred Reed's Russian Christmas Music with antiphonal brass. The expanded ensemble included members of the top three bands at Lassiter and the Cobb Wind Symphony.

Immediately following the concert was an afterglow reception honoring Mr. Watkins, his current students, and the graduating seniors. Everyone enjoyed cake and punch. Overall, we had a lovely time as we had a send off for Mr. Watkins

Lassiter Graduate Wins Contest

Viet Cuong, a 2008 Lassiter graduate, has been selected as the 2012 winner of the Walter Beeler Memorial composition contest for his wind band composition "Sound and Smoke." Viet is quoted as saying, "It’s super weird for me to look at all the past winners…many of them are composers I looked up to when I started composing, and whose scores I studied when writing Ziggurat and Sound and Smoke. Thank you so much to every conductor, performer, listener, and teacher who has been involved with this piece so far! I really cannot thank you enough."

We are so proud of Viet and his musical accomplishments and pursuits after graduating from Lassiter. The composition "Sound and Smoke" will be played on March 1 and March 2 by the Ithaca Wind Ensemble under the baton of Dr. Steve Peterson. Congratulations, Viet.
