LASSITER BAND IN TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PARADE

An exciting and unique opportunity has been presented to the 2017 Lassiter High School Marching Trojan Band. Through the course of a rigorous application process, the Marching Trojan Band has been invited to perform in the 130th Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day in Pasadena, California. An application was submitted in the Spring of 2017 in hopes of an invitation, and an acceptance was granted on September 1st, 2017 to the Lassiter Marching Band for participation.

The Rose Parade (www.tournamentofroses.com) is held in southern California, in conjunction with the Rose Bowl college football game and Pasadena Tournament of Roses. “The Granddaddy of Them All” is marked by a 5 1/2 mile route along Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, for an overwhelming million spectators and worldwide television viewing audience estimated at 60 million in over 80 countries. The parade’s theme changes every year and the 2019 theme is “The Melody of Life”. Parade participants include high stepping equestrian units, majestic floral floats, and spirited school bands from throughout the world. The parade selects bands from hundreds of applications every year – the Tournament of Roses selects about 12 bands for the parade each year. 2019 will be Lassiter’s FIFTH time participating, having marched previously in the 1988, 2001, 2005 and 2013 parades. Fun Fact: The Drum Major from the 1988 (the first invitation) has a son (current freshman) that is marching in the parade 30 years to the day after his parents marched as members of the same Lassiter High School band.
The nationally acclaimed Lassiter Marching “Trojan” Band has gained notoriety for its high level of achievement over the years. The fast paced, musically and visually challenging programs presented every year are performed at football games and in regional and national competitions across the country. Their national recognition as Two – Time National Champions was earned at the Bands of America Grand National Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana. The band’s National Championship victories were over nearly 80 bands in 1998 and again in 2002.
The Tournament of Roses President – Gerald Freeny will come to Lassiter High School April 21-25 to officially invite the band to ‘The Parade’ and meet with the students, Marietta, and the greater Atlanta community. Band students and their parents have the process of raising funds for the parade in California. Any assistance in providing this experience to students will be greatly appreciated and can be directed to presidents@lbba.org or text Roses19 to 41411.
